YARDFOWL - Rogues in Paradise Dissenting Voice
Presenting Yardfowl: A Voice to Challenge the Colonial Legacy.
Yardfowl is an imaginary character in Rogues in Paradise, influenced by various Bajans I have experienced and observed for many years. He embodies the voices of those who survived and still come to grips with the tradition of manifest destiny in Barbados.
Unlike the colonial narratives, which typically skirt around the topic of slavery or technique it with a sense of guilt, survivors talk to feelings rooted in the genuine and enduring impacts of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. Yardfowl is their voice-- vibrant, unfiltered, and grounded in the lived experiences of his forefathers. He shows the resilience and strength of those who withstood and got rid of inhumane destruction, trauma, and systemic oppression.
Although Yardfowl attended compulsory secondary school and got a traditional British education, he picked to speak in Bajan slang. This purposeful choice adds weight to his statements, asserting his identity and heritage while challenging the status quo. He is outspoken, sensible, and critical of any attempts to gloss over the past or glamorize colonial history.
The Yardfowl Character:
Yardfowl as a Catalyst for Debate: Throughout Rogues in Paradise, Yardfowl's voice works as a continuous thought of the darker truths behind Barbados' history. He provokes idea and dispute, forcing other characters and readers to face unpleasant facts. In conversations with the author, Yardfowl dismisses any attempts to suggest that some planters or colonial figures showed minutes of sympathy. For him, even small acts of compassion are overshadowed by the systemic ruthlessness of slavery. This uncompromising mindset becomes a vital lens through which the narrative checks out the remaining effects of manifest destiny on modern Barbadian society. Yardfowls perspective presses readers to believe seriously about the consequences of historical amnesia, challenging any inclination to gloss over the past's brutal truths.
